Details
Early 14-ton tank wagons, featuring timber saddles, cradles and wire hawsers, were developed to meet the growing demand for oil products during Britain’s rapid industrial expansion in the early twentieth century, including both World Wars. Towards the end of World War Two, a new design incorporating a central anchor mechanism to secure the tank to the chassis was agreed between private operators, the Petroleum Board, and the railway companies.
Construction of this Anchor-Mount design increased in the early 1950s, but the introduction of larger, vacuum-braked tank wagons in the late 1950s soon rendered the design obsolete. The last examples were built in 1963.
