Details
When British Railways was formed in 1948, it inherited thousands of wagons from the pre-nationalisation companies. While many were suitable for general freight, there was a clear need for a wagon designed specifically to carry powdered goods, such as cement, which had previously been transported in bags within vans.
In 1954, the first ‘Presflo’ (short for Pressure Flow) wagon was introduced. It used the process of air fluidisation, pumping air through the powder to prevent clumping and ensure smooth, efficient unloading. The design proved highly successful and remained in widespread use into the 1980s, handling a variety of bulk powder traffic across the country. This model represents a ‘Presflo’ wagon in use for transporting cement, showcasing the ingenuity and practicality of British railway freight engineering.
