Details
When British Railways was formed in 1948, it inherited thousands of wagons from the pre-nationalisation companies. While many were fit for purpose, there was a clear need for a wagon specifically designed to transport powdered goods, such as cement, which had previously been carried in bags within vans.
In 1954, the first ‘Presflo’ (short for Pressure Flow) wagon was introduced. It employed the science of air fluidisation, pumping air through the powder to prevent clumping and allow efficient unloading. The design proved highly successful, remaining in widespread use into the 1980s and serving a variety of bulk powder traffic across the country. This model represents a ‘Presflo’ in use with ICI for the transportation of salt, showcasing the ingenuity of British railway freight engineering.
